Well this is a turn up for the books! Who would have thought a front man of a band that are categorised as Heavy metal, alternative metal, groove metal, industrial metal, noise rock would be here in this top 100!
In at #85, Gleefully anarchic, long-haired heavy-metal rocker-turned-slasher-film-director Rob Zombie sustains an instantly recognizable image on par with his musical contemporaries (and friends), Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne. Long fascinated by Charles Manson, gore films, and the occult, Zombie exudes a dark sensibility that has earned him mainstream success as well as a certain cult following in the film world. Founder of the band White Zombie, the rocker made his name behind the camera not only by directing his group's music videos, but by designing the surreal "head trip" animated sequence in Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996). His first feature outing came in 2003, with the controversial House of 1000 Corpses, a kind of Texas Chainsaw Massacre update, overloaded with buckets of gore, packed with references to '70s and '80s horror staples, and starring no less than Karen Black. Universal rejected the picture, certain of an NC-17 rating, but Zombie refused to make cuts and still emerged with an R. House drew critical pans but purportedly (and unsurprisingly) earned almost twice its small budget. His follow-up, 2005's The Devil's Rejects, did well critically (Roger Ebert commented, "The movie is not merely disgusting, but has an attitude and a subversive sense of humor.") He helmed a remake of John Carpenter's classic Halloween in 2007, and also directed a sequel to the project two years later. His return to grindhouse aesthetics came with 2012's The Lords of Salem.
Zombie's first solo effort was a 1996 song titled "Hands of Death (Burn Baby Burn)", written and performed with Alice Cooper, which went on to receive a nomination for Best Metal Performance at the 39th Annual Grammy Awards. In 1997, he began working on his debut solo studio album, Hellbilly Deluxe, which was released in August 1998. A month later, Zombie officially disbanded White Zombie. Hellbilly Deluxe went on to sell over three million copies worldwide and spawned three singles. His second studio album, The Sinister Urge (2001), became his second platinum album in the United States.
Since he began working with White Zombie, Zombie has been known for his long hair and beard. Zombie and his wife are vegans. He has been an ethical vegetarian since 1982 after viewing slaughterhouse footage. He is a supporter of PETA and was once thanked by the organization for his realistic portrayal of the link between adolescent animal abuse and psychopathy in his remake of Halloween.
Zombie generally refrains from sharing his political and religious beliefs with the public, explaining, "It is best to not discuss religion or politics. It always ends in broken noses...because it upsets people to question their faith in things be it Jesus or George Bush. It's easier to just get angry." An exception occurred in a 2008 interview where Zombie admitted that he does not believe in an afterlife, calling the concept of Heaven "insane". He also noted that he does not believe in concepts such as unidentified flying objects, Bigfoot or extraterrestrial life and believes that "this life is all you get". An additional exception to discussing his religious background occurred in a separate interview when Zombie mentioned that at one point his mother contemplated becoming a nun. In that interview, Zombie said he avoids alcohol and substance abuse, stating, "I certainly didn't achieve anything by being wasted and fucked up."
I like Rob, both for his music & his films. I've not seen any of their live stuff so can't comment on his ability to get the crowd going at gigs but if their studio releases are anything to go by I imagine there is nobody sitting down when they go on stage!
